How many newborn sleeping bags do I need? ›

Newborns are prone to frequent messes and accidents, often requiring multiple sleep sacks. Having at least two or three at home ensures you have a clean one ready when needed—and it's a good idea to keep a spare in your diaper bag for naps on the go.

In our experience, most families continue to use baby sleep bags until the child is ready to transition out of the cot and into a big bed – around 2-3 years old. We offer baby sleep bags up to size 18-36 months as we have found that most children continue using them beyond age 2 and stop somewhere around age 3.

A children's sleeping bags are a wearable blanket to replace bedding and provides an even temperature. The long zipper makes it easy to put on a wiggly body.

Your child's head should not be able to pass through the neck hole when the sleeping bag is zipped up, otherwise it is too big.

Your baby should be 8.8lbs or 4kg before you use a sleeping bag. The safest place for your baby to sleep for the first 6 months is in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you.

In most cases, you don't want to stop using a sleep sack before their first birthday. Otherwise, you'll need to find an alternative way to keep your baby warm that doesn't pose a suffocation hazard. Once they turn one, you can safely transition your child to regular bedding options.

Firmly tuck in sheets and blankets (no higher than the shoulders) to avoid the risk of your baby's head becoming covered by loose bedding. If you are using a baby sleeping bag, don't add extra blankets on top, add an extra layer of clothing or choose a higher tog sleeping bag if you feel the sleeping bag is not enough.

Cleaning the sleeping bag every 7 days is typically sufficient during colder months when babies sleep fully clothed and covered in pyjamas.

This is something I never recommend as it is a danger to your child's safety. Opening the sleep bag can also make it a risk if around an open fire. It can also result in the toddler tripping.

Swaddling, when done properly, is completely safe and recommended for newborns. But as they grow and become more mobile, swaddling can become unsafe if you don't transition your baby out of it at the right time. The AAP recommends that parents stop swaddling their baby (arms in) after they turn two months old.

Sleeping and lying around means your baby isn't moving around or exerting themselves for much of the day. This is completely normal and healthy for a baby, of course. But that may lead to cold hands. This normal lack of moving around means that babies have less blood flow to their limbs (arms, legs, hands, and feet).

Baby sleeping bags can help to reduce the risk of SIDS, as they prevent babies from wriggling underneath their bedding. Just make sure it fits well around the shoulders so there's no risk of your baby's head slipping down into the bag.

Babies are more likely to wake up or present as fussy if they are cold, often in line with a temperature drop.

Curious how many sleep sacks you need? While this really comes down to personal preference, on most baby registries you'll find that your newborn should have three to six sleep sacks in their wardrobe.

Given the variables, a general guideline for many parents is to have about 10-14 newborn footies on hand. This allows for one to two changes per day, with a week's buffer for laundry. You might be comfortable with as few as 5-7 footies if you do laundry more frequently.

A single person in a double bag may feel more comfortable, but if you are trying to stay warm on a really cold night, you want a good single bag rated for the cold weather you are sleeping in. A sleeping bag works by insulating the heat your body produces.

Dress your baby in layers of fitted clothing rather than just thick pyjamas. You can add or take away layers as the temperature changes. As a guide, think about how you would dress yourself for the temperature of your baby's bedroom, and dress your baby in a similar number of layers.
