What time does the train leave from Newburyport to Boston? ›

Trains run every two hours between Newburyport MBTA Station and Boston. The earliest departure is at 15:54 in the afternoon, and the last departure from Newburyport MBTA Station is at 21:29 which arrives into Boston at 22:35. All services run direct with no transfers required, and take on average 1h 7m.

Commuter Rail fares are determined by the Zones you are traveling to and from. A one-way ticket costs between $2.40 – $13.25. Round trip, 10-ride, and monthly passes are also available. Reduced fares are available for eligible riders.

Use Your CharlieCard on the Commuter Rail

You can use your CharlieCard to pay for travel within Fairmount Line Zone 1A. Tap your CharlieCard at the fare validators on the platform.

Hours of operation vary, but most bus and train service starts around 5 AM and ends around 1 AM. There is no late-night or overnight train service in Boston, though some bus service starts as early (or as late!) as 3:30 AM. Schedules vary by mode of transit and day of the week.

When does the subway run? Most trains run between about 5 AM and 1 AM, and some lines have service as late at 1:50 AM. Service runs more frequently during rush hour, between 6:30 AM – 9 AM and 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM on weekdays.

Like all train companies*, you must buy a ticket before you board, or risk getting a penalty fare. Only undiscounted Anytime fares will be available from the conductor** - note that these are more expensive than purchasing before you travel.

Why is it called a CharlieCard? ›

The CharlieCard is named after the lead character in the 1948 protest folk music song, "M.T.A.". The song was written to protest a fare increase in the form of an extra five cent exit fare for longer rides and was later made popular by The Kingston Trio in 1959.

For now, tapping on for multiple riders with one pass remains legitimate across much of the MBTA so long as the card has enough value to cover each person pending approval and implementation of the updated policy.

Only Amtrak Downeaster trains to New Hampshire and Maine arrive and depart from Boston North Station. All other Amtrak services in Boston depart from South Station and Back Bay Stations.
